Norway House Cree Nation

Norway House Cree Nation (NHCN) is a progressive and vibrant Cree community located in northern Manitoba, along the Nelson River and the shores of Playgreen Lake. With over 9,000 members, NHCN is one of the largest First Nations in the province and serves as a regional hub for health, education, and economic development. Recognized for its extensive amenities and services, NHCN also serves as a gateway to Northern and Eastern communities of Manitoba.

As one of the original Hudson’s Bay Company trading posts and a key site in the signing of Treaty No. 5, Norway House has long been a centre for trade, commerce, and connection. That spirit of entrepreneurship continues today—shaped by our Cree values, community strength, and vision for a self-reliant future.

The Māci Market is part of this ongoing story—linking tradition with innovation by supporting local business owners and sharing authentic Northern Cree products and services with customers near and far.

The NHCN Economic Development Group

The Norway House Cree Nation Economic Development Group leads strategic initiatives that strengthen our local economy, support community-owned and member-led businesses, and create meaningful employment opportunities.

Guided by our 5-Year Economic Development Strategic Plan, we focus on supporting existing businesses, creating new opportunities, and advancing Nation-building priorities through planning, partnerships, infrastructure, and investment. We work at a strategic level, developing projects, securing funding, and providing guidance to departments and community members to support sustainable economic growth.

Our mandate is rooted in long-term planning and opportunity creation for the benefit of all members.

Our Mission

NHCN Economic Development’s mandate is to drive economic activity for NHC and its members by finding, developing, and overseeing opportunities to enable economic independence, active participation in Manitoba’s economy and a thriving local economy.

Our Vision

Our vision is to become the economic Hub of the North. In five years, NHCN will have developed enabling infrastructure, grown our local economy and skilled workforce, and improved community well-being, resilience, and prosperity through economic development.

Māci Market

Māci Market, named after the Cree word "māci" meaning “to start,” is a Nation-led initiative by Norway House Cree Nation to support local entrepreneurship and community-driven economic growth. This digital platform was created to help NHCN members take the first steps in business—turning ideas, talents, and passions into real opportunities.

Māci Market provides a dedicated space for NHCN artisans, makers, and entrepreneurs to share their products and services with a broader audience. By reducing barriers like limited retail access and geographic isolation, the platform helps connect our community with customers across Manitoba and beyond.

Each item featured on Māci Market reflects the creativity, culture, and determination of our people. Every purchase directly supports a local entrepreneur, strengthens our economy, and contributes to a vision of self-reliance shaped by the people of NHCN.

This project is part of a larger story—rooted in our history as a trading hub and carried forward by a new generation of business leaders proud to build, grow, and inspire from within the community.
